Gym Class Heroes
September 19, 2008
Gym Class Heroes is an American band that fuses hip hop and rap with a little bit of modern rock and pop. Originally from Geneva, New York, the band started out when MC Travis “Schleprok” McCoy met drummer Matt McGinley at a local high school gym, hence the name. They later added Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo and Eric Roberts on guitar and bass respectively.
The band started out with Decaydence Records, where their gold-selling “As Cruel As School Children” gave them fair notice and respect in the music scene. Since then, they have reached the top 5 of the charts with their singles “Cupid’s Chokehold” and “Clothes Off”.
Gym Class Heroes started out with a few EPs, and still release a few up to this day, mixing things up with their full studio albums. In 2001 they started out with “…For the Kids”. From there the fresh young band took 3 years before releasing “The Papercut EP” of 2004, which was later followed by the full album “The Papercut Chronicles” in the same year. 2006 saw the band’s “As Cruel As School Children”, which was their ticket to international notoriety as one of the hippest new acts to break into the scene. In 2008, the band released yet another EP in “Patches From The Quilt”, which was later followed by the official full album “The Quilt”.
