Birthplace Of Hip Hop For Sale

September 29, 2008

An apartment in the Bronx area, recognized as the place where hip hop culture was born, is expected to be sold a few days from now. The apartment, located at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, has a $5 million balance that will be settled by its owners, thanks to the building’s landlord group’s plans to withdraw the said property from the moderate housing program of the city.

There are plans to sell the property to a high-profile real estate developer Mark Karasick, which puts the future of the families that currently live there in jeopardy.

Clive Campbell, a Jamaican native who is credited for being the founder of hip hop, moved in to the building in the 1970s. The place soon became home to his base of operations, along with a graffitti crew he created called the Ex-Vandals. This is also where Clive Campbell became known under his more famous monicker of Kool Herc.

In 2007, the building was officially named “the birthplace of Hip Hop” by the city of New York, making it eligible for national and state registrars.
